| Noticias de Ricky-Tick Records |
|
IN FOCUS: THE FIVE CORNERS QUINTET
"Hot Corner" EP, released in May 2008, displays the new sound of The Five Corners Quintet. The three tracks serve as a sneak preview into their upcoming second album, due for release in late 2008. The project's main man, conductor-producer Tuomas Kallio, discussed the new directions of The Five Corners Quintet.
What was the starting point for the second coming of The Five Corners Quintet?
To begin with, one should bear in mind that even the first album was something that was not planned when we recorded the first tracks and released the single "Trading Eights / Blueprint" in 2003. It was only after the project's unexpected success that recording a full-lenght album and putting together a live band came into the agenda.
In that sense, the question was really what to do next. There would have been no point in releasing another album using the same methods and sounds as on "Chasin' the Jazz Gone By" (2005). As I'm not a jazz composer per se, I wanted again to take the sound and take it someplace else. Last time it was more about finding a new angle to postmodern jazz suitable for club spaces and for that purpose I exposed myself to a lot of modern jazz for inspiration.
This time around, however, I mainly listened to rockabilly and rock 'n' roll and became interested in that kind of rough and rugged sound. Thus, it is only natural that I decided to see how it could be used as a new perspective for The Five Corners Quintet. As you will notice when listening to the new tracks, the sound has become more rough around the edges and that was precisely the point. On the new EP there is one track composed by Teppo Mäkynen, which also displays the same rocking uptempo features as I wanted to capture on my own compositions, so in that sense it's a release with all three tracks heading in the same direction.
One thing that still is the same is the idea of composing the tracks right down to the smaller details in the studio, so that even the solos are short and compact and thus work as elements within the song structure.
That being said, it's also noteworthy that the live band has became a tight unit after doing a lot of gigs after the first album so bringing out that energy in the studio is only logical now.
How do these three tracks serve as a preview of the album?
It's hard to say exactly at this point. I think the whole album will operate in the same domain as these three compositions but we're just getting ideas and compositions together in the studio now, so things will probably shape out as the process goes along. Essentially, I would say, whereas the earlier releases were "cool", the new ones are going to be "hot". The whole aesthetic of the project is changing into that direction.
There will also most likely be some guests, vocalists and vibraphone it seems, but all that is still at the planning stage at the moment. Somehow I usually manage to add a string section into most my productions so that's a safe bet as well. We'll see how it all shapes out.
Any long term plans for The Five Corners Quintet?
Well, getting the album done and released is up next. Everything depends on what kind of ideas surface and how the project develops from here on. Again, it needs to be noted that even this has been a lifespan longer than planned for the project initially. The future is open.
